Every person has a right to live in Dignity

In 1967, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. touted guaranteed income as “the most effective” method of eradicating poverty.

The civil rights leader called it a “moral obligation” of the nation.

“The curse of poverty has no justification in our age,” King wrote in his 1967 book “Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?”.

Why Start This Project?

The question we all face now is not whether our country has an inequality problem but what we will do to address it. We see the rich getting richer and the poor left hopelessly behind. The current social safety net fails to provide the economic security it purports and must be enhanced for the 21st century. One in three Gary residents still live in poverty, and many more live paycheck-to-paycheck, struggling to stay afloat. The stakes are simply too high for the single mother working two jobs and still living below the poverty line; for the man who spends four hours commuting daily for a job that doesn’t cover his rent – for us to not try something new. It is in this reality that the Guaranteed Income Validation Effort (GIVE) is proposed.

GIVE is born out of the simple belief that the best investments we can make are in our people.

Imagine this: It is September 2021. The GIVE Project is up and running. The GIVE project is able to provide 200 families in the City of Gary currently living under the poverty line with a guaranteed income of $500 per month for the next 18 months. Imagine the impact this might have on those families. Imagine the impact this might have on the surrounding community. Imagine the impact this might have on the businesses in that community. Imagine the dent this could make in POVERTY in the City of Gary.

A hand-up, rather than a hand-out, GIVE seeks to empower its recipients financially and prove to supporters and skeptics alike that poverty results from a lack of cash, not a lack of character.
